Why do they hate the United States so much? What would make someone do this to innocent people?
These are questions on the minds of people in America right now in the aftermath of the events of
September 11, 2001. I encourage visitors to this web site to take a few minutes to read
this piece from TIME.COM. It is one view of the answer to this question. There are, of course, other
views that vary from the perspective of this author. This piece provides the author's view of historical perspective and draws some conclusions
based on that view. It can serve as a thoughtful backdrop for discussions and reflections on these puzzling questions. It is this discussion
and reflection that I am encouraging, not the adoption of one particular view of the world.
Time marches on and we are opening more and more space between out daily lives and
the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Our leadership has set this nation on a course designed to root out
and destroy the perpetrators, potential perpetrators, and all supporters of international terrorism (as we have defined them).
If we are to prevail in this struggle, we must steel our resolve with a clear understanding of not only what we are
doing and why we are doing it but also of the impact of our policy and that policy's implementation on the rest of the world.
We owe it to ourselves, as well as all of those who are impacted by our actions, to examine our motives, our
strategy, and our tactics in this "war". Call it "second guessing" our leadership, if you will, but this is The American Way. This is not
only our right, it is our solemn responsibility. Above all, in my opinion, we must not embark on this quest with the attitude that we are
right and that we will prevail because God is on our side. This is a page from their play book. What we are defending in this "war" is our
nation's core belief that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their creator {however that term is intrepreted} with rights
to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
A historical perspective is essential to understanding the problem. I suggest, for starters, a visit to the following web site for links to an extensive collection of Middle East oriented
information resources: www.albany.edu/history/middle-east
